| A four-time Olympian, Dixon is one of the greatest of the fabulous New Zealand runners. Dixon is also one of the most versatile runners in history; he ran world-class times for every distance from the mile through the marathon during his illustrious career. He is best known for winning the 1983 New York City Marathon in one of the greatest man-to-man duels in running history with Geoff Smith. Originally from Nelson, New Zealand, Dixon won the 1972 Olympic bronze medal in the 1500 meters and was fourth in one of the greatest 5000 meters race in Olympic history in 1976. In all, he was world-ranked at 1500, 3000, 5000 meters and the marathon. He represented New Zealand and wore the distinctive all black uniform in international competition a record 17 years. |
