| John Howard, Endurance CyclistWords of wisdom: “There is strong evidence in support of cycling as a way to enhance and complement performance in running. Runners who use cycling to complement their running can do high quality workouts on bikes that closely simulate the cardiovascular output of their running workouts without the same stress.” The greatest endurance and speed cyclist in American history, Howard has set countless records and won 12 national championships. He made three U.S. Olympic cycling teams and won a gold medal in the Pan American Games in 1971. In 1981, he won the Ironman Hawaii Triathlon. Most remarkably, Howard set the world record for 24 hours of cycling—539 miles—and also the world land speed record of 152 mph on a bike. In 1989, Howard was inducted into the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame. Currently, he lives in Encinitas, California where he is a coach and runs John Howard’s Cycling School of Champions. His company is called Johnhowardsports.com and it has produced 140 national champions, a dozen world champions and two Olympic gold medalists.
